APDA Nationals 2002:
A Vision of What Could Be...

Sometime last year in the weeks before Nats, Eric Benson (GW, not Stanford) started talking about a 64-team bracket for APDA Nationals, modeled on another college sport, NCAA basketball.  I was captivated by this idea & this year had the energy to give you an idea what that tournament would look like.  We could even put the tournament off a couple weeks & call it "May Madness".

The rankings for the bracket are based primarily on TOTY, since that's the equivalent of the National Rankings in the NCAAs.  For people on multiple TOTYs, their highest finish counts.  People in odd-number situations were left at their highest finish & paired with the next ranking person from their school, except in cases where the next ranking people were on a unique team together.  Thus, people on high TOTYs in some cases "pulled up" partners with lower standing.  Then, to fill out the bracket, quarterfinals & top ten finishes were paired in as though there were TOTY points for such finishes.  These didn't alter the already paired teams, but added debaters & teams to the field.  The quarters finishes are ranked in order of size of tournament, followed by similarly ordered top ten finishes.

The current bracket respects Nationals rulings on hybrids & the Pro-Am tournament not qualling, but ignores the automatic free-seed & finals-finish policy in favor of straight rankings.  This is somewhat arbitrary, but makes it easier to put names in slots.

The good news is that Chicago posted, so these are now completely accurate.  The bad news is that this changed about half the matchups.  So see the real bracket now for yourself...

Also, for heaven's sake, please remember that this is only for fun.  I'm not trying to make judgments about anyone or their debate skill or rank anyone any more than APDA already does.  I had fun doing this & I wanted to share it with folks.  Please don't be offended because that has nothing to do with why I did this.
